The best IPTV player apps compared, by device

Your provider gives you a login; the app that reads it is made by someone else entirely. Which one to install on each device, what to look for, and where never to download from.

The best IPTV player apps compared, by device (Wave IPTV Canada guide)

The short version

  • The player app and the subscription are two separate things. Your provider supplies a login; the app just reads it.
  • You're not locked in. Try one, dislike it, install another and enter the same details.
  • The right choice depends on your device, not on which app is "best".
  • Install only from your device's official store or the developer's own site.

This trips up nearly everyone at setup. You pay a provider, receive a username and password, and then discover you also need an app — which the provider didn't make and doesn't control.

Once you understand why, the choice becomes simple.

Why they're separate

Your provider runs the servers and issues credentials. The player is a piece of software that takes those credentials, fetches your channel list, and displays it. They're built by independent developers, and the same app works with any provider using the same login standard.

That's why you'll see the same handful of apps recommended across completely different services, and why switching providers doesn't mean switching apps — covered in how to switch providers.

Your subscription doesn't care which app is reading it. If you dislike one interface, install another and type the same details in.

Which one for your device

Fire TV Stick

IPTV Smarters Pro is the standard choice. TiviMate is worth the upgrade if you watch a lot of live TV and want a proper guide. Neither is in Amazon's store, so both need sideloading via the Downloader app — the Fire Stick guide walks through it, including why the download address matters.

Android phones, tablets and Android TV

Straight from the Play Store, which makes this the easiest device of the lot. Smarters Pro for most people, Smarters Player Lite if your hardware is older. See the Android guide.

iPhone, iPad and Apple TV

Smarters Player Lite from the App Store, with GSE Smart IPTV as the alternative. Install on the Apple TV itself rather than AirPlaying from your phone — casting re-encodes the video and costs you quality. See the Apple guide.

Samsung and LG televisions

These are the exception, and it catches people out constantly. Samsung runs Tizen and LG runs webOS — neither has the Google Play Store, so none of the apps above will install. You use a player from the television's own store, activated with the TV's device ID rather than a password.

Any guide telling Samsung or LG owners to open the Play Store is simply wrong for those sets. The Smart TV guide has the correct route.

Windows and Mac

The desktop build of Smarters, from the developer's own site. This is the easiest device to set up because you have a real keyboard and can paste your credentials instead of typing them on a remote. See the Windows and Mac guide.

MAG boxes

No app at all. MAG devices use a portal address entered in the settings menu, and the box's own MAC address is the credential. The MAG guide covers it, in the right order.

What to look for in a player

  • Xtream Codes login support. This keeps live channels, films and series in separate sections and updates automatically. The alternative — loading a playlist file — gives you one enormous flat list.
  • A working EPG. Programme names and times against each channel is the difference between browsing and guessing.
  • Favourites and hiding. Fifty thousand channels is only useful if you can reach the twenty you watch.
  • Multiple profiles. Handy for running two subscriptions at once while you evaluate a new provider.
  • Remote-friendly navigation. Some apps are clearly designed for touchscreens and are miserable on a TV remote.

Where to install from — and where not to

This matters more than which app you pick.

  • Use your device's official store wherever one exists. Play Store and App Store builds are signed and scanned.
  • Where sideloading is required, as on Fire TV, use the developer's own domain. Type the address in full.
  • Avoid shortened links. A bit.ly or similar can be repointed to a different file at any time, and you have no way to see what you're installing. Guides that send you to one are asking you to trust something unverifiable.
  • Ignore anyone offering a "modded" or "premium unlocked" build. Those are modified binaries from unknown sources, on a device sitting on your home network.

Common problems, and which one it is

SymptomUsually the
Login rejectedCredentials — check the first letter of the password, auto-capitalised by most keyboards
App won't installDevice — storage, OS version, or wrong store
Channels load but stutterConnection — see why IPTV buffers
No programme guideApp — the EPG installs separately in most players
One channel dead, rest fineProvider — report it by name

The short answer

On most devices, install Smarters and get on with it. On Apple, Smarters Player Lite. On Samsung or LG, the TV's own store. On a MAG box, no app at all.

If the interface annoys you after a fortnight, install a different one and enter the same credentials. It costs nothing to change your mind, which is the useful thing to know here.

Multi-view and recording

Some players, TiviMate in particular, can show several channels at once on one screen or record to storage. Each channel playing counts as one screen on your plan, so watching two games side by side on one TV needs a two-screen plan. Recording a show while watching another also uses two.

Which app fits your home? Four examples

  • A sports fan in Calgary with a SHIELD: TiviMate Premium for the guide, multi-view and frame-rate matching.
  • A retired couple in Moncton with a Samsung TV: IBO Player Pro, set up once by family, with a short favourites list. See IPTV for seniors.
  • A student in Halifax with a laptop and an iPad: IPTV Smarters on Windows and Smarters Player Lite on the iPad, on a one-screen plan.
  • A family in Brampton with a Formuler: the built-in MyTVOnline, with the kids' group locked by PIN.

Switching apps without losing anything

Your channels live on our side, not in the app, so you can try a new player at any time with the same login. Favourites and hidden groups are stored per app, so expect ten minutes of tidying after a switch. Some apps can export and import favourites.

Each player in depth

The comparison table gives the headline. If you are choosing for a particular TV, or you are about to pay for a premium version, here is what each player is actually like to live with.

TiviMate

TiviMate looks and feels like a cable box. Its programme guide is a proper grid with channels down the side and time across the top, and it is fast even with tens of thousands of channels. It runs on Android TV, Google TV, Fire TV and the NVIDIA SHIELD. It does not run on Samsung, LG, Apple TV or Roku.

  • Strengths: the best guide of any player, catch-up straight from the grid, favourites groups, channel number ordering, recording (Premium), multi-view of up to several channels on one screen (Premium), automatic frame rate switching for smoother sport.
  • Weaknesses: the free version is limited; most of the good features need TiviMate Premium, a subscription paid to its developer. Setup screens assume you know what an EPG source is.
  • Best for: sports fans and anyone who misses the cable guide, on Android-based devices.

IPTV Smarters Pro

Smarters is the player most people meet first because it is free, runs on almost everything and has a friendly home screen with big buttons for Live TV, Movies and Series. It is a good all-rounder rather than the best at any one thing.

  • Strengths: free, simple, available on Fire TV, Android, Windows and some smart TVs; separate sections for live and on-demand; built-in catch-up and a decent guide; multiple user profiles.
  • Weaknesses: the guide is less polished than TiviMate's; occasional ads or upsells depending on the version; on some smart TV stores it is not available, so you need an alternative.
  • Best for: first-time IPTV users, households that want one app on several kinds of device.

Smarters Player Lite and similar Apple players

On iPhone, iPad and Apple TV, a Smarters-style player from the App Store does the job well. Apple's store rules mean apps come and go more often, so we keep our Apple guide current with whichever player works best at the time.

  • Strengths: clean interface, AirPlay support, works across iPhone, iPad and Apple TV with the same login.
  • Weaknesses: fewer advanced features than TiviMate; some players charge for removing ads.

IBO Player Pro, Smart IPTV, Flix IPTV and SS IPTV

These are the main options on Samsung, LG and VIDAA televisions, where the app stores are closed. They differ in design, but the setup idea is the same: the app shows your TV's MAC address and device key, and you either enter your Xtream login on the TV or upload your playlist on the app's website.

  • Strengths: no extra hardware; one remote; good enough guides on recent TVs.
  • Weaknesses: most charge a one-time activation fee to their developer after a free trial; app availability changes by TV model year; older TVs can be slow with large lists.
  • Best for: anyone who wants IPTV straight on the TV without a stick.

MyTVOnline 3 (Formuler) and the BuzzTV player

These come built into the boxes and are designed around a remote with channel buttons. They are the closest thing to a cable receiver experience, and they are excellent for households where someone finds app menus confusing.

VLC and Kodi

VLC is the reliable Swiss Army knife for computers: paste your M3U link and channels play. It has no proper TV guide, so it is best for a quick test. Kodi is a powerful media centre that can do IPTV through its PVR IPTV Simple Client add-on; it rewards tinkering but takes far longer to set up than a dedicated player.

How to set up your chosen player properly

Whichever player you choose, the same ten minutes of setup turns a long list into something that feels like normal TV.

  1. Sign in with Xtream Codes rather than the M3U link, if the player supports it. You get the guide and catch-up automatically. See Xtream Codes or M3U.
  2. Let the first load finish. The guide and channel list can take a few minutes the first time. Do not close the app halfway.
  3. Hide country groups you never watch. Most people keep Canada, the US and one or two others.
  4. Build a favourites group with your everyday channels, in the order you like.
  5. Set the player to open on favourites or on the last channel watched.
  6. Check the time zone. The guide should match your clock. If it does not, see TV guide not showing.
  7. Set a parental PIN if children use the TV. See parental controls.
  8. Try catch-up once so you know where it is when you need it.

Free or paid: is a premium player worth it?

The player is separate from your subscription, so any money you pay for a premium player goes to its developer, not to us. Whether it is worth it depends on how you watch.

  • Worth paying for if you watch a lot of live sport (multi-view and auto frame rate), you miss cable's guide, or you want to record.
  • Not necessary if you mainly watch a handful of channels and some films. A free player does that perfectly well.
  • Smart TV activation fees are usually a one-time cost per television, which works out to very little over the life of the TV.

Our suggestion: start with the free option on your device, use it for a week, and only upgrade if you find yourself wishing for a specific feature.

Safety: installing players without risking your device

Player apps themselves contain no channels, which is why legitimate ones are allowed in official stores. The risk comes from where you download them.

  • Use the official app store for your device whenever the player is available there.
  • When you must sideload on a Fire TV, type the developer's own website address into the Downloader app yourself. Avoid shortened links shared on forums.
  • Never install "fully loaded" APKs that promise free channels. They are the ones that carry malware. See the risks of free IPTV.
  • Keep players updated. Updates fix playback problems and security issues.
  • Never paste your login into a website other than the official site of the player you use. Your M3U link contains your username and password.

Using two players at once

Many households run two players: TiviMate on the living room SHIELD for sport, and Smarters on the bedroom Fire Stick and a phone. That is completely fine. Your login works in any number of apps and devices; what your plan limits is how many play at the same moment. A one-screen plan means one stream at a time across all of them. If you regularly watch in two rooms at once, choose a two-screen plan. Our guide to IPTV on several TVs explains how to choose.

What to expect from players in the next year

Players change faster than TVs do. A few trends are worth knowing so a change does not catch you off guard:

  • App store rules tighten periodically. Smart TV and Fire TV stores sometimes remove or restrict players. Keep a second option in mind and check our device guides, which we update when that happens.
  • Newer Fire TV models are moving to a different operating system that handles sideloaded apps differently; check app support before buying a new Fire TV specifically for IPTV.
  • HEVC and 4K support keeps improving in players, which means sharper pictures at lower bandwidth on newer devices.

None of this affects your Wave IPTV subscription: your login works with whichever player you choose. If you want to try players before committing, the free trial works in every one of them.

Settings checklist for each main player

TiviMate

  • Playlists → add Xtream Codes → let channels and EPG load.
  • Settings → EPG → update interval every 12 or 24 hours.
  • Settings → Playback → try "AFR" (auto frame rate) for sport; turn off if the screen blanks on each change.
  • Long-press OK on a group to hide it, or on a channel to add it to favourites.
  • Settings → Parental control → set a PIN if children use the TV (Premium).

IPTV Smarters Pro

  • Login with Xtream Codes API → give the profile a name like "Living room".
  • Settings → Player Selection → if a channel stutters, try the other player engine.
  • Settings → Time Format and Time Zone → match your province.
  • Settings → Parental Control → set a PIN and choose categories to lock.
  • Settings → Automation → refresh channels and EPG on start-up.

Smart TV players (IBO Player Pro and similar)

  • Write down the MAC address and device key from the first screen.
  • Add your Xtream login on the TV, or upload the playlist on the app's website.
  • Restart the app after adding the playlist so it loads cleanly.
  • Change the default parental PIN (often 0000) straight away.

Moving from one player to another

  1. Install the new player alongside the old one; there is no need to remove anything first.
  2. Sign in with the same login. Your channels live on our side, so the lineup is identical.
  3. Recreate favourites. Favourites are stored per app. Some players can export and import them; otherwise it takes about ten minutes.
  4. Close the old player while testing, so you do not use two screens at once on a one-screen plan.
  5. Uninstall the old player once you are happy, to free storage on smaller devices.

Common myths about IPTV players

  • "The player gives you the channels." No. A player is empty until you add a subscription. Apps that claim to include free channels are the risky ones.
  • "A paid player means better picture." The stream is the same. Paid features add convenience (guide, multi-view, recording), not quality.
  • "You can only use one player." You can use as many as you like with the same login; your plan only limits how many play at once.
  • "Smart TV apps are always worse than sticks." On recent TVs they are perfectly good. On older TVs, a stick is usually faster.

Player questions answered

Which player has the best TV guide?

TiviMate, on Android-based devices. On Formuler boxes, MyTVOnline's guide is just as good. On smart TVs and Apple devices, the guides are simpler but still useful.

Can I watch two games at once?

Yes, with TiviMate Premium's multi-view on a capable device. Each game playing counts as one screen, so two games side by side need a two-screen plan.

Why did my player disappear from the app store?

App stores occasionally remove or restrict players. An app already installed usually keeps working. If you need to reinstall, our device guides list the current alternatives.

Is it safe to sideload a player on a Fire Stick?

It is safe when the file comes straight from the developer's own website and you type the address yourself. Avoid shortened links and "fully loaded" app bundles.

Accessibility features worth knowing

Players differ in how easy they are to use for people with low vision, hearing loss or limited mobility. A few things to look for:

  • Closed captions: most players can display captions when the channel provides them. Turn them on in the device's accessibility settings and in the player's own subtitle options.
  • Text size: TiviMate and MyTVOnline let you enlarge the guide; on smart TVs, the TV's own menu text size setting helps.
  • Simple layouts: Smarters' big home buttons and Formuler's channel-button remote are the easiest for anyone who finds menus confusing. Our simple setup guide explains how to reduce the list to a handful of channels.
  • Voice control: on Fire TV and Google TV, the remote's voice button can open the player app by name, which saves navigating menus.
  • One remote: turn on HDMI-CEC on the TV so the streaming device's remote also powers the TV on and changes the volume.

If someone in your household needs a particular setup, tell us which device you have and we will suggest the most accessible player for it.

Our recommendation in one paragraph

Choose by device first. On a Fire TV Stick, start with IPTV Smarters Pro because it is free and simple, and move to TiviMate if you want a cable-style guide. On Google TV, Android TV or an NVIDIA SHIELD, go straight to TiviMate. On Samsung, LG or VIDAA, use IBO Player Pro or Smart IPTV and accept the small one-time app fee. On Apple devices, use a Smarters-style player from the App Store. On a Formuler or BuzzTV box, the built-in player is already excellent. Whatever you pick, sign in with Xtream Codes, hide the groups you never watch, and build a favourites list. That ten minutes makes more difference than the choice of app.

Frequently asked questions

Do IPTV player apps come with channels?

No. A player is an empty shell until you add a subscription. That is also why any app promising free channels deserves suspicion.

Is TiviMate free?

TiviMate has a free version with limited features. The full version, TiviMate Premium, is a paid subscription to its developer, separate from your Wave IPTV plan.

Can I use my login in more than one app?

Yes. Install as many apps on as many devices as you like. Your plan limits how many play at the same time.

Does the player app affect picture quality?

The stream is the same, but decoding and scaling differ. If a channel looks or plays worse in one app, try the hardware or software decoder option, or another app.

Try it on your own TV first

The free 24-hour trial is the full service, with 50,000+ channels. Test it on a busy evening, then choose a plan from $20 CAD, or $6.67 a month on the yearly plan.
