The short version
- Xtream Codes is a username, password and server URL. Use it whenever your app supports it.
- M3U is one long link containing your whole lineup. Use it when the app will not take Xtream.
- Both open the same channels. Xtream is faster and includes the TV guide.
- Treat both like a password: they contain your login.
When your Wave IPTV order arrives, the email contains two sets of details: an Xtream Codes login and an M3U link. People often ask which one to use, or whether they are two different services. They are the same service, delivered two ways, and the choice affects how your app behaves.
An M3U link
M3U is a simple text format that has been around since the days of MP3 playlists. Your M3U link is a web address that, when opened by an app, returns a long list: every channel's name, group, logo and stream address, one after another. The app reads the whole list and shows it to you.
It is universal: nearly every player in the world can read an M3U, including VLC on a computer. The trade-offs are that a list of tens of thousands of channels is a big file to download and parse, especially on a modest streaming stick, and that the TV guide usually needs to be added as a separate EPG address.
An Xtream Codes login
Xtream Codes is a login method rather than a file. You give the app the server URL, your username and your password, and the app talks to the server directly. It asks for the live channels, the movies and the series as separate sections, fetches the TV guide automatically, and can request catch-up for past programmes. Because the app only asks for what it needs, it loads faster and stays tidier.
Side by side
| Xtream Codes | M3U | |
|---|---|---|
| What you enter | Server URL, username, password | One long link |
| Live, movies, series | Separate sections | Often one long list |
| TV guide | Included automatically | May need a separate EPG link |
| Catch-up | Supported | Rarely |
| Loading speed | Faster | Slower on large lineups |
| App support | Most IPTV apps | Almost every app |
Which to use on which device
- Fire TV, Android TV, Google TV, NVIDIA SHIELD: Xtream in IPTV Smarters or TiviMate.
- Apple TV, iPhone, iPad: Xtream in a Smarters-style player.
- Samsung, LG, VIDAA: Xtream if the app offers it; otherwise the M3U link, uploaded on the app's website.
- Formuler, BuzzTV: Xtream in MyTVOnline or the BuzzTV player.
- Windows or Mac: Xtream in IPTV Smarters, or M3U in VLC for a quick test.
- MAG boxes: a portal URL, which is a third method explained in the MAG guide.
Why Xtream Codes loads faster
With an M3U, the app downloads and processes the entire lineup every time it refreshes, even if you only watch ten channels. With Xtream, the app asks for categories first and fills them in as you browse. On a Fire Stick with limited memory, that difference is the gap between a list that opens instantly and one that takes a minute.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting the port. If the server URL in your email includes something like
:8080, it must be typed too. - Using https instead of http when the email says http.
- Pasting the M3U link into the Xtream server field. They are different fields for a reason.
- Sharing the link. Your M3U contains your username and password. Anyone with it can use your screens.
What we send you
Every Wave IPTV order includes both: the Xtream Codes details and the M3U link, plus a link to the setup guide for your device. If you are unsure which to use, start with Xtream, and if anything looks odd, send us a message. More on what arrives in your inbox on the IPTV subscription page.
What is inside an M3U file
An M3U playlist is a plain text file. If you opened one, you would see a list of entries, each with two lines: a description line starting with #EXTINF, which holds the channel name, its logo, its group and a guide ID, and a second line holding the stream address. That is all. A player reads the file from top to bottom and builds a channel list from it.
Because it is a single flat list, a large M3U for tens of thousands of channels, plus films and series, becomes a very big file. The player has to download and process all of it before showing anything, which is why M3U playlists can be slow to load and to refresh on smaller devices.
What happens when you log in with Xtream Codes
An Xtream Codes login works differently. Instead of downloading one giant file, the player talks to the server through an interface and asks for things in pieces:
- It logs in with your server address, username and password.
- It asks for the list of live TV categories, then the channels in each category.
- It asks for the guide data separately.
- It asks for film and series catalogues only when you open those sections.
- It asks for catch-up programmes on supported channels when you scroll back in the guide.
That is why Xtream Codes logins usually load faster, organise films and series into proper sections with posters and descriptions, and support catch-up.

| Films and series sections | Mixed into one long list | Separate, organised sections with artwork |

| Loading speed | Slower for large lists | Faster, loads in parts |
| Editing the list | Possible with a text editor | Done through favourites and hidden categories in the player |
| Player support | Almost every player | Most popular IPTV players |
When an M3U playlist is the better choice
M3U is not obsolete. It is the right choice when:
- Your player only supports M3U, as some simple or older players do.
- You use a general-purpose media player such as VLC on a computer.
- You want to build a small, custom list of a few channels.
- You use home media software that imports M3U playlists into its own guide.
For everyday TV viewing on a Fire Stick, Google TV device, Apple TV or smart TV, Xtream Codes is almost always better.
Entering your login correctly
Most login problems come from small typing mistakes. When entering Xtream Codes details:
- Type the server address exactly as given, including
http://and any port number after a colon. - Do not add a slash at the end unless it was in the details we sent.
- Usernames and passwords are case-sensitive; check capital letters.
- Watch for characters that look alike: a capital I and a lowercase l, a zero and a capital O.
- Avoid adding spaces at the start or end, which some keyboards do automatically.
Our login errors guide explains each error message if something still does not work.
Using both on different devices
You can use an Xtream Codes login on one device and an M3U playlist on another with the same account. Each still counts toward your screen limit when playing. Many households use Xtream Codes on the TVs and an M3U playlist in VLC on a laptop, for example.
Xtream Codes and M3U questions
Is one better quality than the other?
No. The streams are the same. The difference is how the player loads and organises the list.
Why does my M3U playlist take so long to load?
Large playlists are big files. Switching to an Xtream Codes login, or hiding categories, usually helps.
Why is there no guide with my M3U playlist?
M3U needs a separate guide link added in the player. With Xtream Codes it is automatic.
Can I convert one to the other?
You do not need to. We can send both formats for the same account; just ask.
What about MAG boxes?
MAG and similar boxes use a portal address and their MAC address instead. See the MAG guide.
Which to choose, in one line
Use Xtream Codes on any TV device whose player supports it, and keep M3U for computers, simple players and special cases. If you are unsure which your player supports, tell us the player name and we will send the right details.
Frequently asked questions
Are Xtream Codes and M3U different channel lists?
No. Both give you the same lineup. They are just two ways of delivering it to your app.
Which is better for IPTV?
Xtream Codes, whenever your app supports it. It loads faster, separates live TV, movies and series, and includes the TV guide.
When should I use M3U?
When your app or device does not support Xtream logins, for example VLC on a computer or some smart TV players that only accept a playlist link.
Is it safe to paste my M3U link into a website?
Only on the official website of the player app you are using. Your M3U link contains your login, so never post it publicly or share it.
