The short version
- Google TV / Android TV sets (Sony, TCL, many Hisense): install apps from the Play Store. Easiest.
- Samsung (Tizen) and LG (webOS): use players from their own stores, such as IBO Player Pro or Smart IPTV.
- VIDAA (Hisense, Toshiba): limited store; works on many models.
- Roku and Vizio: difficult; a $50 stick is the practical answer.
Why skip the box?
Fewer cables behind the TV, one remote instead of two, nothing extra to buy and nothing extra to update. For many households, especially where someone finds switching inputs confusing, a TV that runs IPTV on its own is the cleanest setup there is.
Samsung smart TVs and Tizen
Samsung TVs run Tizen and install apps only from the Samsung Apps store. Look for IBO Player Pro, Smart IPTV or Flix IPTV; availability varies by model year. Most give you a free week and then ask for a small one-time activation fee paid to the app developer. You add your Wave IPTV account with the Xtream login on the TV, or by uploading the M3U link on the app's website using the TV's MAC address. Step-by-step in the Samsung guide.
For sport on Samsung, turn off Auto Motion Plus if hockey looks smeary or the sound runs ahead of the picture.
LG smart TVs and webOS
LG's Content Store carries several IPTV players, including IBO Player Pro, Smart IPTV, Flix IPTV and the free SS IPTV. The Magic Remote's pointer makes typing logins much easier than on most TVs. One LG-specific tip: turning off Quick Start+ stops apps getting stuck between sessions. See the LG guide.
Sony, TCL and Hisense: Google TV and Android TV
These sets have the full Google Play Store, so you can install TiviMate or IPTV Smarters Pro directly, exactly as on a Chromecast. They are the best smart TVs for IPTV because the app choice is the same as on a streaming stick. Follow the Android TV guide. Hisense makes both Google TV and VIDAA models, so check which yours is.
VIDAA (Hisense and Toshiba)
VIDAA is a lightweight system with a smaller store. Many models have a suitable Xtream-compatible player; some entry-level ones do not. The VIDAA guide shows what to look for.
Brand by brand at a glance
| TV system | Brands | IPTV without a box? | Typical apps |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google TV / Android TV | Sony, TCL, Hisense (some), Philips | Yes, easiest | TiviMate, IPTV Smarters Pro |
| Tizen | Samsung | Yes | IBO Player Pro, Smart IPTV, Flix IPTV |
| webOS | LG | Yes | IBO Player Pro, Smart IPTV, SS IPTV |
| VIDAA | Hisense (some), Toshiba | Often | Xtream-compatible store apps |
| Roku TV | TCL (some), Hisense (some), Insignia | Not really | Workarounds only |
| SmartCast | Vizio | No | Use a stick |
The Roku challenge
Roku's store does not allow most IPTV players, and those that appear tend to be removed. Screen mirroring from a phone works for the odd game, but for everyday viewing a Fire TV Stick or Google TV device in a spare HDMI port is the practical fix. Details in the Roku guide.
Vizio and older smart TVs: when a box is necessary
Vizio's SmartCast system has no IPTV player apps. Older TVs from any brand may also lack HEVC decoding or simply be too slow for a list of tens of thousands of channels, and may no longer receive updates. In all these cases, a modern stick gives the TV a second life.
Choosing the right player for your TV
If your TV offers several apps, pick one that supports the Xtream Codes login. It brings the TV guide and separates live TV, movies and series. Our player app comparison covers each option in more detail, and if typing logins with a TV remote fills you with dread, send us a WhatsApp message and we will walk you through it.
Whichever TV you own, the free trial is the quickest way to see whether it runs IPTV well on its own.
Frequently asked questions
Can I watch IPTV on my smart TV without a box?
Yes, on most Samsung, LG, VIDAA, Sony, TCL and Hisense Google TV sets from about 2018 onwards. Roku and Vizio TVs are harder.
Which smart TV is best for IPTV?
Google TV and Android TV sets (Sony, TCL, many Hisense) have the widest app choice. Samsung and LG work well with their own store apps.
Is a smart TV app as good as a Fire Stick?
On a recent TV, often yes. On older TVs, the processor can be slow with large channel lists, and a stick is quicker.
Do smart TV IPTV apps cost money?
Some charge a small one-time activation fee to their developer after a free trial. That is separate from your Wave IPTV plan.
Try it on your own TV first
The free 24-hour trial is the full service, with 50,000+ channels. Test it on a busy evening, then choose a plan from $20 CAD, or $6.67 a month on the yearly plan.
