How to set up IPTV on Chromecast with Google TV

Chromecast with Google TV (and its successor, the Google TV Streamer) runs full Google TV, so it installs IPTV players straight from the Play Store. It is one of the quickest devices to set up and one of the best value for money. Have your Wave IPTV email ready.

How to set up IPTV on Chromecast with Google TV (IPTV Canada setup guide)

Before you start

  1. Your Wave IPTV email with the username, password and server URL.
  2. The Chromecast set up and signed in to a Google account.
  3. The power adapter that came in the box. The TV's USB port often cannot supply enough power, which causes random restarts.
  1. Open the Apps tab

On the Google TV home screen, go to Apps and choose Search for apps. You can also hold the Google Assistant button on the remote and say the app's name.

  2. Install a player

Search for TiviMate or IPTV Smarters Pro and select Install. TiviMate has the best TV guide on any platform but its full features need a TiviMate Premium subscription paid to its developer. IPTV Smarters Pro is free to start and very easy to use.

Not in the store? If an app is unavailable in your region, our Android TV guide shows how to install it safely with the Downloader app.
  3. Add your Wave IPTV login

Open the app. In IPTV Smarters choose Login with Xtream Codes API; in TiviMate choose Add playlist → Xtream Codes. Enter the server URL, username and password from our email. Type carefully: the password is case-sensitive.

  4. Let the lineup load and start watching

The app downloads your channels, the TV guide and the on-demand library. That takes a minute or two the first time. Open a channel to check it plays, then add favourites so the channels you use every day sit at the top.

Casting from your phone versus a proper app

You can cast from some IPTV apps on a phone to the Chromecast, but installing the player on the Chromecast itself is better in every way: the remote works, the TV guide is full screen, and your phone stays free. Casting is handy at a friend's place; the installed app is for every day.

Make room on the device

The original Chromecast with Google TV has only about 8 GB of storage. If apps start acting up, go to Settings → System → Storage and clear the cache of apps you rarely use. Uninstalling one or two unused apps usually makes the IPTV player noticeably quicker.

If something goes wrong on Chromecast with Google TV

These cover the problems people actually run into on this device. If yours is not here, send us the exact wording of the error and a photo of the screen.

The app crashes when the channel list loads

Usually a storage or memory issue. Clear the app's cache under Settings → Apps, restart the Chromecast, and try again. Using the Xtream login instead of a full M3U link also loads more efficiently.

Remote buttons do nothing inside the app

Some players need the OK button held for a second to open menus. In TiviMate, a long press on OK opens channel options and favourites.

The picture looks soft on my 4K TV

Check Settings → Display & Sound → Advanced display settings and allow 4K. Not every channel broadcasts in 4K; the 4K group in the lineup holds the ones that do.

Can I use my Chromecast in a hotel or at the cottage?

Yes. Your login is not tied to a location. On hotel Wi-Fi with a sign-in page you may need to complete the sign-in on the TV first; some hotel networks block streaming ports entirely.

Guides for other devices

One IPTV subscription works on all of them. Only the app changes.
