How to watch IPTV on Roku Stick, Express and Roku TV

Roku is the one popular platform that makes IPTV awkward. Its channel store does not allow most IPTV players, and the few that slip in tend to disappear. So instead of pretending there is a perfect Roku app, this guide gives you the three routes that actually work in Canadian homes, from best to most basic.

How to watch IPTV on Roku Stick, Express and Roku TV (IPTV Canada setup guide)

Before you start

  1. Have your Wave IPTV email open with the username, password, server URL and M3U link.
  2. Know your Roku model: Settings → System → About. Screen mirroring support depends on it.
  3. If you plan to mirror, keep the phone or computer on the same Wi-Fi network as the Roku.
  1. Decide which route suits you

There are three ways to get IPTV onto a Roku-powered screen:

    • Route A, the most reliable: plug a Fire TV Stick or Google TV device into another HDMI port and use that for IPTV. Your Roku keeps doing Netflix and Crave.
    • Route B: screen mirroring from an Android phone or a Windows laptop running an IPTV app.
    • Route C: AirPlay from an iPhone or iPad, on Roku models that support it.

Route A costs a one-time $40 to $60 but gives you a proper remote, a TV guide and no phone tied up. Routes B and C are free and fine for the odd game.

  2. Route A: add a streaming stick

Plug the stick into a free HDMI port, power it from a wall plug rather than the TV's USB port, and follow our Fire TV guide or Google TV guide. Switch inputs with the TV remote when you want IPTV. This is what we recommend to most Roku owners.

  3. Route B: turn on screen mirroring

On the Roku go to Settings → System → Screen mirroring and set the mode to Prompt or Always allow.

On an Android phone, install IPTV Smarters Pro or TiviMate, add your Wave IPTV login, then open Smart View, Cast or Screen mirroring from the quick-settings panel and pick your Roku. On Windows, press Windows key + K and choose the Roku.

  4. Route C: AirPlay from an iPhone or iPad

Check Settings → Apple AirPlay and HomeKit exists on your Roku; if it does, AirPlay is supported. Install an IPTV player on the iPhone (see our Apple guide for app suggestions), sign in, start a channel and tap the AirPlay icon to send it to the Roku.

  5. Keep the picture smooth

Mirroring sends video twice over your Wi-Fi: once to the phone, once to the Roku. Keep the phone close to the router, plug it in so it does not go to sleep, and close other apps. If the picture stutters, lower the stream quality in the player to Full HD.

What about M3U player channels in the Roku store?

Every so often a channel that plays M3U playlists appears in the Roku store, and some people use them happily for a while. They are usually limited (no proper TV guide, no catch-up, no Xtream login), they get removed without warning, and some ask you to upload your playlist to a third-party website. If you try one, never pay a yearly fee for it. A streaming stick is a better long-term spend.

Is Roku the right device for you?

If most of your watching is IPTV, Roku is the weakest option on our list. If you mostly use Netflix, Crave and the free Roku channels and only want IPTV for sport, Route A gives you both worlds for the price of a takeout dinner. Compare devices in our best device for IPTV guide.

If something goes wrong on Roku

These cover the problems people actually run into on this device. If yours is not here, send us the exact wording of the error and a photo of the screen.

My Roku does not appear in the mirroring list

Make sure both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network, not one on the 2.4 GHz band and one on a guest network. Restart the Roku from Settings → System → Power → System restart, then try again.

Mirroring works but keeps dropping

Mirroring is sensitive to Wi-Fi interference. Move the router closer, switch to the 5 GHz band, or use Route A. Screen mirroring was never designed for three-hour hockey games.

Can I install IPTV Smarters directly on Roku?

Not through the official store. Roku does not allow side-loading for normal users, so any website promising a "Smarters for Roku" install is best avoided.

Does my plan cover the phone and the Roku at the same time?

When you mirror, only one stream plays, so a one-screen plan is enough. If someone else watches on another device at the same time, you need an extra screen.

Guides for other devices

One IPTV subscription works on all of them. Only the app changes.
