Note that regional feeds differ across the province. The Montreal, Quebec City, Sherbrooke and Saguenay versions of the same networks carry different local news. If your local bulletin matters, check your own region's feed rather than assuming.

Le sport en français

The single most important thing to understand in this market, and the one most services get wrong.

A hockey game broadcast in French and the same game in English are two separate productions on two separate networks, with different commentary teams and often different rights arrangements. RDS and TVA Sports carry French-language coverage; the English broadcasts sit elsewhere entirely.

So the useful question isn't "does it have hockey." It's does it carry the French feed, with the commentary I want, for the games I actually watch? A service can have extensive hockey coverage and still not have what a francophone household wants.

An overlooked detail that becomes irritating quickly. Your EPG should show French programme titles for French channels, at correct Eastern times.

Some services deliver a guide that's English-only or half-populated for French feeds, which turns browsing into guesswork. You won't notice on day one. You will by day three.

Open a French channel during your trial and look at what the guide actually says.

Multilingual Quebec

Beyond French and English, Quebec — Montreal especially — has substantial Arabic, Spanish, Italian, Haitian Creole, Portuguese and Greek-speaking communities. Cable serves these through add-on packs layered on a base package you already pay for.

Quebec residents have protections beyond the federal baseline. Under the province's private-sector privacy law as amended by Law 25, you can access and correct your personal information, receive it in a structured technological format (portability), and request de-indexing in certain circumstances. Consumer protection

Quebec's Loi sur la protection du consommateur is among the strongest in Canada, particularly on contract terms, unilateral changes and automatic renewal. Before subscribing to any service, check:

• Whether the subscription expires or renews automatically, and how to cancel.
• Whether prices are in Canadian dollars with nothing added at checkout.
• What the refund policy actually says — and whether the plan cards and the FAQ agree with each other.

Internet across Quebec

Bell and Videotron dominate, with independents including EBOX, Oricom and TekSavvy reselling on the same networks, often for less. Urban speeds are good and most city plans are unlimited.

Outside the main corridors it changes. Rural Quebec — the Gaspésie, Abitibi, Côte-Nord — has more fixed-wireless and satellite connections, which frequently carry data caps.
